Laughter As Medicine

The Wests Group, through the NSW Government’s ClubGRANTS program, is proud to support Clown Doctors Australia with a $20,000 donation, helping its Clown Doctors program continue delivering laughter, comfort, and connection to children receiving care at John Hunter Children’s Hospital.

Each year, more than 14,000 children from the Hunter New England region are admitted to John Hunter Children’s Hospital, where hospital stays can be stressful and emotionally challenging for both young patients and their families. The Clown Doctors are specially-trained performers who work alongside clinical staff to help reduce fear, pain, and anxiety through evidence-based humour therapy.

Through laughter, music, and play, Clown Doctors support children during medical procedures, provide positive distraction, and create moments of joy that contribute to emotional wellbeing, resilience, and recovery. Their presence offers reassurance to parents and carers, while also supporting hospital staff to deliver more efficient care, helping to ease pressure in what can be highly demanding environments.

The Wests Group is proud to support Clown Doctors Australia in using laughter as a powerful therapeutic tool, helping children and families navigate challenging moments with care, connection, and hope.
