Supporting Cancer Patients with Scalp Cooling Technology

The Calvary Mater Newcastle Hospital Auxiliary is enhancing patient care with the purchase of a second Paxman scalp cooling machine for the Day Treatment Centre, supported by a $30,000 donation from Wests Group through its ClubGRANTs initiative.

This advanced technology helps chemotherapy patients, including those undergoing breast cancer treatment, retain their hair, reducing the emotional and psychological distress associated with hair loss. Scalp cooling works by lowering the scalp’s temperature before, during, and after chemotherapy, minimising blood flow to hair follicles and reducing hair loss. Patients wear a cooling cap connected to a machine for several hours, helping alleviate one of the most feared side effects of chemotherapy.

Currently, the hospital’s single machine can treat only two patients per day. With the addition of a second machine, four patients daily will have access to this empowering therapy, giving them greater control over their treatment journey.
