Community Spotlight – The Humour Foundation

The Clown Doctors program at John Hunter Children's Hospital utilizes humour therapy to enhance the quality of life for children and their families. The Wests Group Australia is pleased to have contributed $18,650 through its ClubGRANTs initiative. This support enables the Clown Doctors to make weekly visits to the hospital, working alongside medical staff to address the physiological and psychological needs of young patients.

Clown Doctors play a critical role in distracting frightened children, empowering long-term patients, and providing relief for anxious parents. They also contribute to a positive hospital environment by supporting staff. The program offers cognitive, physiological, social, emotional, and psychological benefits to children, using laughter, music, play, and drawing.

Approximately 4,200 children from the City of Newcastle are admitted to John Hunter Children's Hospital each year. The Clown Doctors' activities foster a sense of community, reduce anxiety, and improve the hospital experience for children and their families.
